Five-time CrossFit Games champion Mat Fraser described HYROX Boston as “the most fun HYROX I’ve ever done,” after competing in the doubles division alongside HWPO community member Matthew Hughes.
The event marked a major weekend for Fraser’s training brand, HWPO Training, which served as title sponsor. The team organised shakeout runs, fan activations, and community stations throughout the venue, creating one of the most energetic atmospheres yet seen at a HYROX event in the United States.
Fraser and Hughes completed the race in 1:01:12, with splits of 35:42 for running, 21:13 for workouts, and 4:17 in the Roxzone. The pair ranked in the top 10% for Wall Balls and top 8% for the 200m Farmers Carry, demonstrating strong all-round consistency, to be expected given the history competing with strength.
His partner Hughes admitted the pace was higher than expected.
“He said he wanted to chill,” Hughes joked. “Then we went out guns blazing on the first two runs. That wasn’t chill.”
As well as Fraser’s appearance, HWPO had a significant presence across the weekend. Sammy Moniz raced with fellow HWPO ambassador Hilary Tacco, while the wider team — including Matt O’Keefe, Ste Fawcett, Joe Buda, Dan Sutton, Alex Ouelett, Sara Franco, Justin Sweeney, and Jake Marconi — all took part. Brooke Wells and her twin sister Sydney Wells also competed in the women’s doubles race.
Fraser, who retired from CrossFit competition in 2020, said his focus now is on enjoyment and long-term fitness rather than competition.
“I retired, became a dad, and now I’m just fitnessing for fun,” he said. “Whether it’s CrossFit or HYROX, everyone’s here to get better.”
HWPO CEO Matt O’Keefe said the event had been a success both for the brand and the city.
“It was an awesome weekend for us as a team and as a brand,” O’Keefe said. “As a Bostonian, it was really special. We had 17,000 people come through the venue, and HYROX’s founders told us they’re going even bigger next year.”
HYROX continues to expand rapidly, with participation expected to exceed one million athletes worldwide by 2026. The Boston event reinforced the sport’s growing profile and Fraser’s ongoing influence in shaping the next generation of hybrid fitness.
