In the female category, we have Meridian athletes such as Kristin Holte, Annie Thorisdottir, Sam Briggs, Sara Sigmundsdottir and Emma McQuaid amongst many others.

For the men, athletes such as Jonne Koski, BK Gudmundsson, Steven Fawcett and Frederik Aegidius are all eager and fired up to earn their place at the Crossfit Games.

Phil Hesketh has unfortunately fractured a metacarpal during training and won’t be able to compete this year, we wish him a speedy recovery. Here are 6 of the rising stars of Crossfit who have made it to the Regionals, and are keen to plant their names firmly on the Crossfit map as well.

8. HINRIK INGI OSKARSSON

The Icelandic Crossfit scene is renowned for the strength of its females. With Annie Thorisdottir taking two Games titles, Katrin Davidsdottir winning the Games last year and Sara Sigmundsdottir gunning hard for it this year, the guys tend to be talked about a little less. But with BK Gudmundsson taking 3rd place at the CrossFit Games last year, he showed that it wasn’t just about the Dottirs. Hinrik is only 21 years old, and took 2nd place at the Athlete Games, so this Meridian he has nothing to lose and everything to prove.

7. SARA ARMANIUS

She is the fittest Woman in Sweden after winning the Open there, and finished 11th overall in the Region. She also placed 6th at the Athlete Games, training under a program from Crossfit Uppsala.

6. MIKE BJERREGAARD

This 24 year old Danish coach is involved with Weightlifting 101 and JST programming, and combines solid capabilities with a Barbell and a powerful engine with a fiercely competitive spirit.

5. JULIE ABILDGAARD

She finished third in the Open and won the final workout 16.4, which consisted of a 13-minute AMRAP of 55 Deadlifts, 55 Wall Ball shots, a 55 calorie row and 55 handstand pushups. She completed 318 reps. The two-time Regional team athlete will be competing with Team Crossfit Copenhagen 1 this year in Madrid.

4. ATES BORAN

Ates is the fittest man in Turkey, and a coach at Crossfit 34 in Istanbul.

3. ODDRUN EIK GYLFADOTTIR

Another Team Crossfit Copenhagen 1 athlete, she finished 8th in Europe in the Open. As Meridian Athletes go, she is another tough and technically strong competitor.

2. JAK CORNTHWAITE

In the words of Steven Fawcett ‘He’s a big strong guy who can also move for his size. Once I’m done slogging my guts out this year to get to the Games again, I’ll be putting a lot of my time into getting him there too!’ Jak is a coach at Crossfit JST, and was also on the British youth radial and laser standard national sailing squad.

1. MERIDIAN ATHLETES: CARMEN BOSMANS

In 2015 she took 6th at the Meridian Regionals, and finished 3rd in Africa this year in the Open. A coach at Innerfight Dubai, Carmen has a spot at the Crossfit Games set firmly in her sights, and is looking to build to that 5th place finish from last year.
