Ahead of the professional strongman league championship. Joey Szatmary has decided to make his cultivated return to the competition after a brief two-year break from competing. He has certainly chosen the perfect time to return and make his presence felt amongst the fellow competitors. It will be taking place in Irving, Texas on the 9th of August.
During his time off Mr. Szatmary has been enhancing his performance and skills within his own private gym, a more Zen space to practice for the competition you could say. When speaking about his training recently his has been very outspoken on “star power “and its origins which come from focusing on his workouts without interruption and distractions.

For the past month, he has been stepping up his workout routine, in order to prepare mentally and physically for the event. Given his previous experience at these events, with a good amount of training, he should be able to roll back into a steady position within the rankings. For his warm ups he has been doing roughly three minutes on an echo bike, and then he moves onto focusing exercises that target his lower back. This also will assist with his hip mobility and his upper body movements.
Specifically for his lower body his warm up also includes
- Inch worms
- Thoracic spine openers
- Hip circles
- Fire hydrants
- Scorpions
- 90/90
- Banded squats
Swiftly moving on to what he does to warm up his upper body, its certainly working out a few muscles simultaneously. His list includes:
- Banded Rows
- Banded presses
- Banded upright rows
- Plyometric banded push ups
And then for the core of his workouts he has been doing log presses, 6 x 3 (240 pounds). This is a key exercise that is thrown at the athletes at the PSL Championships
When discussing his training for his competitions, he mentions the important of good techniques and how having the right equipment properly ensures he is ready for the weights he will lift. He says that when he is “trying to put as much weight as possible overhead”. This is in order to help his form and structure during the exercises such as the log press which is a very intense and challenging event.
