CrossFit has released the names of four athletes who have provided drug tests containing banned substances after the Semifinals. Among the athletes, two have received the invitation to the Games – Ivan Kukartsev who won the Asia Semifinal, and Tyler Lee, a member from 7th placed CrossFit Mayhem Somos at North America East Semifinal. All athletes are appealing to the decision. Kukartsev believes someone sneakily put something in his bottle during competition for him to fail his drug test.
There is a little bit more than a month to the CrossFit Games in August and results from drug tests from the Semifinals are beginning to come to light. Every year there is at least a couple of athletes who fail their drug test and this time CrossFit released the name of 4 athletes who had contaminated substances on their tests – three of them come from the Asia Semifinal.
- Ivan Kukartsev – 1st place finisher at the Asia Semifinal – provided a sample on-site on May 19, 2024, that contained GW1516-sulfone and GW1516-sulfoxide, metabolites of GW1516, as well as LGD-4033 and dihydroxy-LGD-4033, metabolites of LGD-4033.
- Ilias Kuliev – 3rd place finisher at the Asia Semifinal – provided a sample on-site on May 19, 2024, that contained 3a-hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, a metabolite of Drostanolone.
- Anatolii Borisenko – 4th place finisher at the Asia Semifinal – provided a sample on-site on May 19, 2024, that contained GW1516-sulfone and GW1516-sulfoxide, metabolites of GW1516.
- Tyler Lee – a member of CrossFit Mayhem Somos, 7th place finisher at the North America East Semifinal – provided a sample on-site on June 1, 2024, that contained 3a-hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, a metabolite of Drostanolone as well as GW1516-sulfone and GW1516-sulfoxide, metabolites of GW1516.
From these four, Ivan Kukartsev and Tyler Lee have received their invitation to compete at the CrossFit Games. If Ivan Kukartsev is disqualified, the following athlete would be invited which, in this case, is Ilias Kuliev – if he is also disqualified, the following athlete is Tyler Lee. In case all three athletes are disqualified because of banned substances, CrossFit has done drug tests up to the fifth athlete at the Asia Semifinal, meaning the last hopeful to get a backfill invitation from the individuals would be Ilya Makarov.
On the team’s side, should Lee’s appeal be denied, Crossfit could backfill their spot to 9th place team CrossFit Levis Mayhem.
Teams and individuals will battle for the title of Fittest on Earth beginning August 8th. With 41 days until the first day of competition, it is likely that CrossFit will invite the next in line for the CrossFit Games, should it come to that.
Ivan Kukartsev Believes Someone Spiked His Drink During Competition
Ivan Kukartsev was one of 23 athletes on BOXROX list of individual elites going to the CrossFit Games for the first time in their career.
The Russian athlete competed for the first time in an individual Semifinal since 2018, when he logged his first Open numbers. Back in 2021, he was part of a team at the Asia Semifinal as well who was bound to the Games, but never made it.
The 26-year-old athlete wrote on Instagram that he received the news of his disqualification “a week ago.” ”Samples A and B are positive for prohibited substances GW1516 and LGD4033.”
According to his appeal, he is taking all his supplements to the laboratory to find out which substance was contaminated, but he believes something nastier took place during his 3-day competition in Busan, South Korea.
“I can assume that someone could have put spice in my bottle. Unfortunately, I am an irresponsible person and always kept my backpack open.“
However, it is highly unlikely that Ivan Kukartsev will get a decision to be banned from this CrossFit competition (and future ones) cancelled or reversed. It comes to mind, for example, the case of Larissa Cunha back in 2021 when she proved her supplements were contaminated and instead of being able to participate at the CrossFit Games, she was had her ban shortened from 4 years to 2 years.

Approximately a week ago, I received a “letter of happiness” about a positive doping test. I was sure that the lab I was checking, the devils went crazy and I requested a sample B. But nothing has changed. Samples A and B are positive for prohibited substances gw1516 and lgd4033. After thinking for a short while I pretended how could I catch such an infection? The first thing is I took all my badass, creatines, dicks to the lab, which will show the full composition and in case it will detect something dirty.
I don’t want to turn into a schizophrenic, but knowing our “favourite” CrossFit community, I can assume that someone could have put spice in my bottle.
Unfortunately, I am an irresponsible person and always kept my backpack open. Almost all three days of competition, when I came to the site, the neck of the bottle from which I drank was sticking out of my open backpack.
Let me draw your attention to the fact that it was the active forms of the substance that were discovered. This means that I ate the pill(s) the day before the drug test. This fact confirms the absurdity of the whole situation. If only metabolites (residual substances of drugs) were found in me, I could still be pulled into the crooked bazaar, that I was using something, cleaned myself poorly, and burned. But no, go to hell, it looks like a setup in its purest form.
At the moment, I am waiting for results from the laboratory, after which I will write an “explanatory report” if something is found in the dietary supplements. Now the term of punishment has not been determined for me, but without any evidence of my innocence, it will be a four-year classic.
Being a conscious person, I have always been against the use of doping in the profession. Knowing the severe penalties that follow for these tricks, I have never used illegal substances to gain an advantage in the competitive arena. I made myself, every day from year to year I went to training, which sometimes made me sick to my stomach, but I endured and believed in myself and my goal. No pharmaceuticals or supplements will help if you are weak in spirit and in your head. You can only shit yourself quickly, but I managed it and not quickly.
Okay, I’m not giving up CrossFit, I’ll see it through to the end and then we’ll see.
