PFAA “Dissatisfied” to CrossFit’s “Lack of Transparency”

| Nov 28, 2024 / 3 min read

The  PFAA (Professional Fitness Athlete Association) has released a statement in which it said to be “dissatisfied” and “disappointed with CrossFit’s lack of transparency of their investigation.” PFAA also disclosed that it would support athletes who boycott the CrossFit Games, should they choose to do so.

The PFAA and CrossFit LLC are trading blows once again. After the tragic death of Lazar Đukić, the PFAA made 3 demands, among which was the removal of Dave Castro from “his position in the Sport team.” CrossFit said it would conduct a third-party investigation into what happened and make changes accordingly. The investigation was finalised recently, but a full report will not be made public by CrossFit headquarters due to “privacy and legal considerations.” CrossFit would implement an Athlete Council, which, for some, looked like a “middle finger to the PFAA” since it is exactly what the association already does.

Because of the conclusion of the investigations and how it was perceived by some people, Emma McQuaid said she would not be competing in the official season of the CrossFit Games (not taking part in the Open, Semifinals and, therefore CrossFit Games).

And it is with athletes taking this kind of stance, that the PFAA released a new statement following their dissatisfaction with CrossFit’s third-party investigation and what the company decided to do following the death of Lazar Đukić.

“Some athletes may be positioned to veto the CrossFit Games. The PFAA supports athletes who choose to not compete in the CrossFit Games.”

Here is the PFAA entire post:

The PFAA Board is disappointed with CrossFit’s lack of transparency of their investigation and dissatisfied by their next steps.

The PFAA represents over 100 of the best elite individual athletes in this sport. This independent representation is the best method of championing athlete rights and we remain committed to this mission. At this time, we can’t represent all athletes from every division, although we do believe that athletes’ needs differ by degree, not kind.

In light of CrossFit’s announcements regarding safety and procedural changes and the 2025 season:

  • Some athletes may be positioned to veto the CrossFit Games. The PFAA supports athletes who choose to not compete in the CrossFit Games.
  • Some athletes may choose to compete in the CrossFit Games. The PFAA exists solely to support professional athletes in our sport and will continue to support these athletes on an individual level and through continued education and professional discourse with CrossFit.
  • Some athletes may look to explore alternative competition routes. The PFAA is engaged with the broader ecosystem of functional fitness competition to expand opportunities for athletes competing in these spaces.

Our demands were made with the hope of guiding the Sport of CrossFit toward a stronger future. While they chose not to meet them, we remain committed to building unity among athletes and finding ways to create meaningful change together. We continue to believe in the huge benefit a healthy and successful elite sport offers the broader CrossFit community.
