The 24.3 CrossFit Open live announcement has had to make a u-turn in terms of athletes competing. We were supposed to see Tia-Clair Toomey going head-to-head against Arielle Loewen, but the 6x Games champion announced she would sit out the live workout. CrossFit HQ was quick to replace her with three other elite athletes: Roman Khrennikov, Jay Crouch, and Sydney Wells.
Tia-Clair Toomey was expected to take part in the battle of the fittest moms in the Sport on Thursday afternoon when 24.3 CrossFit Open workout will be announced. However, as BOXROX previously wrote, she has sustained a wrist injury and the question on whether she would be able to compete at all during the Open had surfaced.

Two weeks later, Tia-Clair Toomey has managed to post her Open scores to the leaderboard, but her injury has caught up with her in a way that she and her coach and husband Shane Orr believe it is best for her to sit out of the live workout.
Tia-Clair Toomey Sits Out of 24.3 Open Announcement
In the heartfelt explanation provided by Tia-Clair Toomey, the renowned athlete sheds light on her decision to step back from participating in the Open live announcement, a move driven by the need to nurture her wrist back to health.
“It’s hit me a lot harder than what I originally thought it would because I was really looking forward to doing that [the live announcement],” she says in a video.
Delving into the specifics of her physical condition, Tia-Clair explains, “There’s like not a lot that affected my wrist; it’s only inevitable to think that there’s some kind of front rack position, maybe by muscle-up, just movements that are going to show up that definitely hinder my wrist.” This highlights her awareness of her body’s limits and the potential risks involved in competing before fully recovering in front of a live audience.
Tia-Clair Toomey emphasised the responsibility athletes bear during the Open, stating, “It’s really important for the athletes that are doing the open announcement to put a really good representation of the workout.” This quote underscores the influence and impact top athletes have on the wider community, highlighting their role as exemplars of effort, technique, and sportsmanship.
Tia-Clair also expressed her strategic approach to full recovery and participation:
“We’ve decided to think of the long game. Like, I’m not doing the actual workout, I am going to be doing the workout but not until like Monday.”
She further elucidates her involvement, stating, “I’m still going to be a part of it. I’m probably going to be jumping on the commentary, doing interviews, all that good stuff, getting amongst the community.”
Roman Khrennikov, Jay Crouch and Sydney Wells Take Over Tia’s Place at the Announcement
CrossFit HQ was quick enough to replace Tia-Clair Toomey’s place during the 24.3 CrossFit Open live announcement. And it has come back not with one replacement, but three: Roman Khrennikov, Jay Crouch and Sydney Wells.

Roman Khrennikov

Roman Khrennikov, a distinguished CrossFit athlete from Russia, has become a notable name in the sport, overcoming considerable obstacles to showcase his talent on a global stage. This act of perseverance was not just a highlight of his career but also one of the most inspiring moments in CrossFit Games history. Khrennikov’s ability to perform at an elite level, even under duress, and his role as a father add further depth to his character as a top-tier CrossFit athlete.
