Dave Castro has revealed what the clue for the CrossFit Open 24.2 workout is. Check it out.
Are you good at guessing games? Are you a good detective? Do you have a higher perception compared to your peers? Well, honestly, that might not matter when it comes to CrossFit Open workout clues unveiled by Dave Castro.
We have seen in the past clues related to the hit game Wordle, a gif of a ball descending a ladder for 23.2, and even a photo of two ponies.
The last clue, for 24.1, Dave Castro simply posted a photo of a mushroom on his Instagram. And during the announcement, Dave Castro went to the chalkboard and, while explaining the workout details, he kept drawing a mushroom on it. So yes, maybe nothing makes sense.
Nevertheless, let’s take a look at Castro’s clue for the 24.2 CrossFit Open workout.
Dave Castro Reveals Clue for the 24.2 CrossFit Open Workout
Dave Castro posted about 48 hours prior to the announcement of the workout what his clue for the 24.2 CrossFit Open workout is: a short video of a chess pawn being hit by a puck on a shuffleboard.
It clearly looks like this workout clue is another one of Dave Castro’s mind game.
For those unfamiliar with the game of shuffleboard, the puck thrown is also known as “weight,” “schuckle,” or even “disc.” In shuffleboard, the weights are typically made of metal or a heavy material, and in table shuffleboard, they have a concave bottom that allows them to glide smoothly over the surface of the table. Players push these weights down the shuffleboard table, aiming to land them in a scoring area while also trying to knock their opponents’ weights off the board or into lower-scoring zones.
The pawn, in chess, is the most numerous piece on a chess board and is also the only one with a reduced mobility that can only go forward – only one square forward, no moving backwards (like kings are able to).
24.2 CrossFit Open Workout Predictions

So, that is the clue and the fun part now is inundating the internet with conspiracies trying to figure out what the workout is making wild predictions. Here are some of the predictions made online:
OrigamiSan2945 says “a pawn needs to advance 6 spaces on a chessboard to promote to a queen. 6 rounds of simple movements, then 8 more rounds at heavier weight and higher skill:
- 6 rds double-unders,
- power clean
- 8 rds crossovers
- squat clean
Brian Spin, from the Barbell Spin website, believes in something a little more literal to the hint: “My guess is that the pawn represents the fast guys who did well in 24.1. They will get pushed out in week 2 as the weight gets heavy.”
Cardowoop believes there will be rowing involved. “The only thing that slides is a rower. Row till you fall over.” Stompanee also made a little joke about the “puck” and the chess pawn. “I legit thought the pawn was getting knocked over by a little chocolate pie and got excited 24.2 would be an eating contest. Sigh.”
Another one very detailed explanation by an user who has since deleted his account is the following:
“Pawns move forward by two first, but they only move one thereafter. So it starts at two and then increases only upwards by one (or smaller intervals) each round for an AMRAP. The pawn also attacks diagonally, so cross over, and it all works to take your legs out. Also it’s on a wooden board, kinda like an Oly lift platform.
24.2a
15 min AMRAP:
- 5 Shuttle Runs; 10 Box Jumps; 15 Wall Balls; 20 Crossovers
Every round increase by 1 SR, 2 BJ, 3 WB, 4 CO
24.2b
- 1 RM Complex- Clean/Hang Clean/Front Squat/S2O
However, Dave Castro said on his podcast that there would not be tape needed for any of the workouts during the Open, so shuttle runs are out of the question. But we like how that person thinks.

Nevertheless, here is what BOXROX thinks it might be and why:
24.2 CrossFit Open Workout prediction:
For time, 3 rounds of:
- Barbell front squat
- Barbell thruster
- Pistol squats
We believe the hint tells us about a heavy weight (or puck) that will take out your legs when you least expect it. The entire workout will be done with the same weight on the barbell, so it could fairly easy while doing front squats, but much harder with thrusters. The pistol squats is when you still be taxing out your legs, but with your bodyweight so it’s seen as your “recovery time.”
Good luck to everyone who will take on 24.2 RX.
