CrossFit has revealed a 2024 CrossFit Games workout that individual athletes will have to go through. It is the memorial WOD Chad 1000x
This is not necessarily the first workout elite athletes will have to go through during the CrossFit Games, but it is the first workout revealed by CrossFit – it could be programmed for athletes to compete on Friday evening, or even on Saturday.
First 2024 CrossFit Games Workout Revealed – Chad 1000x
Chad 1000x
For Time:
- 1,000 Box Step-Ups (20 in)
Wear a Ruck Pack (45/35 lb)
Complete 1,000 Weighted Box Step-Ups as fast as possible. Use a 20-inch Box and wear a Ruck Pack that weighs 45/35 lb for men/women.
A Ruck is a weighted Backpack to simulate the gear carried during a hiking expedition.
Score is the time it takes to complete all 1,000 repetitions.
According to the website Behind the White Board, the average athlete performs this workout in about 69 minutes (for men) and 72 minutes (for women). However, still according to the website, elite athletes could take between 35-45 minutes to complete Chad 1000x.
However, Dave Castro said there will be a twist with the workout, still not revealed.
The workout honours Chad Wilkinson, a Navy SEAL, who died by suicide on October 29, 2018. He is survived by friends and family members including two children and wife, Sara – a CrossFit community member, athlete, Seminar Staff trainer, and founder of The Step Up Foundation.
The workout is meant to honour Wilkinson and to bring awareness to veteran suicide and prevention.

The unveiling of the Chad 1000x as a 2024 CrossFit Games workout has had mixed feelings straight away.
Those who are in favour of the workout, are happy to see a hero WOD back in the Games. The fact that Chad 1000x died by suicide will put a bigger spotlight on veterans PTSD and suicide prevention. But also the mental obstacles this workout will put athletes through.
“And I think the back half of the face will be more exciting than people expect. I also just like the idea of punishing single modality workouts,” wrote coach James Hobart, for example.
“Interested to see what part of the weekend this will be scheduled and the secondary toll it will take on recovery,” wrote Mitsu Fuji Media.
On the other side, some people have been against Hero WODs on CrossFit Games. Some argue that if CrossFit wants to be globally inclusive, it should think about that before programming a US veteran workout into their CrossFit Games.

2024 CrossFit Games Schedules 4 Cuts for Individuals and Teams
However, the 2 biggest and valid complaints people have against Chad 1000x at the CrossFit Games are:
- It is boring to watch
- Quarterfinals had problems counting the reps of steps ups this year
“CrossFit: what can we do to stop the public losing interest in CrossFit? Also CrossFit: let’s make the step up and down from a box 1000 times. What’s next, a handstand marathon?” asked Mark on IG.
“I get the significance but I can’t think of a less entertaining workout for fans. Or the athletes. Or the judges….” wrote CrossFit972.
“Community: The rules for box steps in quarterfinals were ridiculous and caused a nightmare in judging. Dave Castro: Go do 1000,” wrote John Wooley from his new meme account wooleymemeth.
During the 2024 Quarterfinals, the first workout had athletes doing dumbbell box step-ups for 1 minute, along with other movements, for a maximum number of repetitions. Quarterfinals are done online, so videos had to be sent for validation and there was a massive penalty for athletes apparently not reaching full extension on the hips and/or legs at before descending from the box.
So, as mentioned by John Wooley, it was a nightmare for judges to check a few box step-ups. Now there is going to be 1000x of them and it could be up to 40 male and 40 female athletes, depending on when the workout is programmed.
