Dave Castro Plans the 2027 CrossFit Games to Take Place in Europe

Dave Castro has revealed that he is hoping, and planning, for the 2027 CrossFit Games to happen in Europe instead of the United States.

The Sport of CrossFit is predominantly North American. Created in the United States, every single year since its inception, the CrossFit Games has taken place in a city within its borders.

In the past, CrossFit has made attempts to make the event more globally inclusive – mainly with the Open announcement taking place in different places around the world. While Semifinals are done on all continents of the globe, the ultimate stage showcasing the Fittest on Earth was always in the United States of America. But that can change in just three years time.

Dave Castro has been doing interviews with athletes who are going to the 2024 CrossFit, but the athletes are also able to ask a few questions back to Dave Castro. And here is where Laura Horvath questioned whether or not the CrossFit Games would continue to happen in Texas or if it would move away from the city in the near future.

When asked if the CrossFit Games would take place in Texas longer than a year, Dave Castro said yes. “Probably a couple of years, at least.” Horvath then asked if the company was still thinking of doing the Games in Europe at some point.

“Yes, for sure. That’s the plan, I really hope everything can fall in place for that to happen. […] I would the 21^st year of the Games to be in Europe.”

Then Castro went on to explain that right now we are on the year 18^th. “Next year will be the 19^th, the year after the 20^th, and then maybe for the 21^st take it overseas.”

This means that three years from now, in 2027, if all falls into place as Castro said it, we will have the CrossFit Games featured in Europe and not in an American city.

Forth Worth was announced as the city of the Fittest on Earth last year. Previously, Madison held the torch for the home of the CrossFit Games since 2017. Before Fort Worth was revealed as the next city to host the events, there was a growing consensus that the CrossFit Games should finally be taken overseas, just like the Rogue Invitational will be this year held in Scotland instead of the traditional Texas.

Which Cities Could Host the 2027 CrossFit Games in Europe?

From here on out is mainly speculation. BUT… we at BOXROX decided to come up with a few theories of cities we believe could host the hypothetical European 2027 CrossFit Games – and why we think that could work.

1. London

Although the CrossFit Games hasn’t happened at a major city like London, the capital of England has great connections with the outside world for people around the globe to fly into. Also, the city has hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics and other international events – they simply know how to prepare the entire city for a massive event and continue working normally.

Ah, it also doesn’t hurt that they have hosted the Semifinals Strength in Depth in 2022, so there is a bit of CrossFit love in the city already.

2. Berlin

Speaking of cities who hosted CrossFit sanctioned events, Berlin is another option for the 2027 CrossFit Games – they hosted the German Throwdown last year as the Semifinal and the CrossFit Europe Regional in 2019 and CrossFit Meridian Regional in 2018.

3. Madrid

Another city who hosted the CrossFit Meridian Regional on two occasions (2017 and 2016) and also was the home of the announcement for the CrossFit Open 23.1 last year. Madrid also holds the CrossFit sanctioned event Madrid Championship, very famous for attracting some of the elite athletes from Europe.

4. Amsterdam

Amsterdam was the home of the European CrossFit Semifinal in 2022 when they had the Lowlands Throwdown. The city is relatively small, so this could pose a challenge to hold a weekend-long event such as the CrossFit Games.

5. Paris

Paris once held the French Throwdown and is a megalopolis able to comfort everyone’s needs when it comes to having access and hotels for athletes travelling from all corners of the globe.

Which city do you want to see host the 2027 CrossFit Games in Europe?
