Kristóf and Laura Horváth Say CrossFit is Driven By Survival and Profit

| Aug 22, 2024 / 3 min read

Kristóf Horváth and his sister Laura Horváth shared online a new statement regarding why they backed out of competing at the 2024 CrossFit Games following the death of Lazar Đukić. They believe CrossFit’s values is revolved around “survival and profit” and that some athlete’s response was “inhumane.”

Kristóf Horváth wrote a statement on his Instagram and his sister Laura Horváth, 2023 Fittest Woman on Earth, shared it as well on her stories. They measured no words to blame not only CrossFit, but also throw some harsh words at their fellow competitors.

“My trusts is lost in most of my peers,” it reads.

In the statement, besides saying that CrossFit’s “values” is of a corporation who’s basic instinct is “survival and profit,” the Horváths also talked about PFAA’s demand for change and removal of Dave Castro from his position. “I am not against of change and the group that’s trying to take steps towards it, but I am conflicted within mostly because my trust is lost in most of my peers.

Here is the full statement:

Actions speak louder than words.

We stood up not because we’ve seen an opportunity, but because we wanted to mourn a friend and a fellow competitor and because our group believes that they’re directly responsible for his death and their response to it was inhumane and was driven by “values” of a corporation who’s basic instinct is survival and profit.

To “sacrifice” for the greater good was then and there! One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that: acting out of fear will move the masses into the direction of its “creator” and human greed is more powerful then I’ve ever imagined.

I am not against of change and the group that’s trying to take steps towards it, but I am conflicted within mostly because my trust is lost in most of my peers.

In a very primitive way I think it is truer then ever: You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Remind Me: How Did We Get Here?

During event 1 of the 2024 CrossFit Games, Serbian athlete Lazar Đukić drowned a few metres away from the finish line, although no staff saw while it happened. His body was taken out of the lake 2 hours later.

The remainder of the events for the day were cancelled and CrossFit staff had conversations with athletes about the future of the 2024 CrossFit Games. Hours later, it was decided the Games would continue the following day, starting with a Tribute to the life of Lazar Đukić. Soon after the tribute happened, the current champions Laura Horváth and Jeff Adler withdrew from competition.

The Professional Fitness Athlete’s Association (PFAA) has released a statement earlier this week with 3 demands following the death of Lazar Đukić, one of them being the removal of Dave Castro from his position and more transparency on the investigations of the tragic event.

Although the PFAA has specifically mentioned Dave Castro in their statement, CrossFit Inc. is yet to respond or say anything officially – it has been dead silence for the past 48 hours.
