Jonathan Edel, master athlete from division 40-44 years, and Shawn Ramirez, from division 50-54 years old, have both failed their drug test following the end of the 2024 CrossFit Games. While Ramirez is appealing to the decision, Edel is not and received a 4-year automatic ban from competing in CrossFit-sanctioned events.
CrossFit Inc. revealed both athletes did the mandatory drug testing after finishing on the podium for their respective divisions.
According to an official statement from the organization, Edel “provided a sample at the competition that contained Anastrozole, exogenous steroids, and metabolites of GW1516.” Ramirez “provided a sample at the competition that contained dihydroxy-LGD-4033, a metabolite of LGD-4033.”
The Case of Shawn Ramirez
Ramirez finished 3rd at the 50-54 division. And while that might not be remarkable by itself, the case of Shawn Ramirez failing a drug test is unprecedented. Why? Because this is the second time the athlete fails a drug test administered by CrossFit HQ, the only athlete to have done so in history.
He also received a 4-year ban after failing drug tests after the end of the 2018 CrossFit Games. According to an interview on the Sevan Podcast done right after the end of the ban, the athlete said he sued the supplements company that had contained the banned substance and ‘settled out of court’.
Jonathan Edel Is NOT Appealing
Unlike Shawn Ramirez, Edel is not appealing to the failed drug tests administered by CrossFit Inc. and has automatically received a 4-year ban from competing.
Edel finished on top of the podium, but with the failed test, Chicho Quesada takes the golden medal, Julian Serna moves up to 2nd place and Rudy Berger finishes 3rd.
