Master’s athlete Shawn Ramirez is banned from competing at any CrossFit-sanctioned event for the rest of his life after failing a second drug test in the past 6 years. Ramirez finished 3rd at the 50-54 division at the 2024 CrossFit Games.
According to CrossFit’s statement, Ramirez failed a mandatory drug test after he “submitted a sample at the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games that contained dihydroxy-LGD-4033, a metabolite of LGD-4033.”
Ramirez then received a “lifetime sanction” after his appeal was denied. Now, why would he receive a lifetime ban instead of the typical 4-year? The answer is likely because this is his second failed drug test.
As reported earlier by BOXROX, Ramirez is the only athlete in the history of the Sport to have failed a drug test administered by CrossFit twice. The first time was at the 2018 CrossFit Games where he received the normal 4-year ban.
According to an interview on the Sevan Podcast done right after the end of the ban, the athlete said he sued the supplements company that had contained the banned substance and ‘settled out of court’.
The interesting trajectory of Ramirez through his career is that he won the CrossFit Games as a master athlete 4 consecutive years – from 2014 to 2017. In 2018, the year he failed a drug test, he finished 2nd.
So, if you did your math correctly, Shawn Ramirez was banned from 2018 to 2022, making him only eligible to compete again in 2023. So, four years later, Ramirez goes back to competing and, although he was usually first or second during the Age-Group Quarterfinal, Ramirez finishes in 913rd in 2023.
In 2024, he made the jump to the following division: 50-54 years old. This time, he finished 1st overall during the Quarterfinals, 31st at the Semifinals, and ultimately 3rd at the CrossFit Games.
Ramirez is technically still allowed to compete in fitness-related tournaments, but nothing connected with the brand CrossFit for the remainder of his life.
